    Study Notes

Life Processes are essential activities that sustain living organisms. These processes allow them to survive and continue their existence. Here is a brief overview of some key life processes and how they function in various forms of life:

    Nutrition

Nutrition is the process by which animals and plants obtain energy from food sources. It involves breaking down nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and water into simple molecules that can be absorbed through cell walls. For instance, photosynthesis in plants converts sunlight into chemical energy stored in sugars like glucose. In animals, digestive enzymes break down complex molecules so cells can absorb them. Humans require a balanced diet with all necessary nutrients to maintain healthy body functions.

    Respiration

Respiration occurs when cells release energy from nutrient molecules. Oxygen enters cells via air passages called tracheae; it combines with organic matter within these cells, releasing carbon dioxide. Plants also produce oxygen during daylight hours through photosynthesis. Most animals breathe using lungs filled with air, whereas aquatic animals exchange gases directly across their skin membranes. Some bacteria breathe using iron instead of oxygen.

    Circulation

Circulation refers to the movement of blood throughout the body. Blood carries oxygen from the respiratory system to organs needing replenishment. Blood vessels deliver nutrients to different parts of our bodies while removing waste products. A pulse pumps blood outward while returning it back to the heart. Without proper circulation, metabolism would slow down significantly.

    Excretion

Excretion removes wastes from the body. Urine produced after filtering fluid from bloodstream contains excess salts and nitrogen compounds. Kidney filtrate passes through tubules before entering another tube leading outside of the kidneys. Sweating expels excess salt, while defecation eliminates solid waste removed from intestinal tract. Many insects have specialized structures to eliminate liquid waste without damaging surrounding tissues.

    Growth & Repair

Growth involves increasing size or complexity over time due to adding new material. It occurs mainly during childhood and adolescence. Cells divide rapidly during growth periods. Healing also requires cell division—for example, if you cut your finger, healthy tissue grows around edges where cuts occurred until they heal completely. Tissue repair fixes damaged areas by growing new connections between old ones. This restores normal structure more effectively than just filling gaps left behind by injury.

In summary, life processes enable us to remain alive and well fed by ingesting nourishing foods, maintaining adequate levels of oxygen and other nutrients, keeping our internal systems functioning smoothly, and processing wastes efficiently.
