Data-Link Layer

Located between the physical and network layers.
Provides services including framing, flow control, and error control.

Subdivided Data-Link Layer

Divided into two sublayers: Logical Link Control (LLC) and Media Access Control (MAC).
LLC provides an interface between the MAC layer and the Network layer.
MAC is concerned with who can access the network when multiple computers are trying to access it simultaneously.
MAC is also concerned with physical addressing (MAC addresses) and access control methods.

Ethernet and the OSI Model

Ethernet is the dominant LAN technology in the world.
Operates in two areas of the OSI model: the lower half of the data-link layer (the MAC sublayer) and the physical layer.
LLC and MAC are included in the data-link layer.
Physical layer includes the medium.
