Study Notes
Data-Link Layer
- Located between the physical and network layers.
- Provides services including framing, flow control, and error control.
Subdivided Data-Link Layer
- Divided into two sublayers: Logical Link Control (LLC) and Media Access Control (MAC).
- LLC provides an interface between the MAC layer and the Network layer.
- MAC is concerned with who can access the network when multiple computers are trying to access it simultaneously.
- MAC is also concerned with physical addressing (MAC addresses) and access control methods.
Ethernet and the OSI Model
- Ethernet is the dominant LAN technology in the world.
- Operates in two areas of the OSI model: the lower half of the data-link layer (the MAC sublayer) and the physical layer.
- LLC and MAC are included in the data-link layer.
- Physical layer includes the medium.
