OSHA Overview
- Established in 1970 to ensure worker rights and safety.
- Aims to reduce workplace hazards and monitor job-related injuries and illnesses.
Employee Rights
- Entitled to representation during investigations and ability to file complaints.
- Must be informed of cited violations and can report unsafe conditions without retaliation.
- Access to OSHA standards and health/safety statistics of the employer.
- Can be part of safety committees.
Supervisor Responsibilities
- Immediate supervisors have primary compliance responsibilities under OSHA.
- Must proactively reduce OSHA complaints through supervision and address complaints promptly.
- Required to ensure department follows OSHA compliance and maintain the OSHA 300 report for work-related injuries/illnesses.
Posting Requirements
- Employers must report work-related injuries/illnesses which include deaths and significant medical treatments.
- Must post OSHA 300 report, federal/state employee rights information, and inspection violations.
Rights of Entry
- Compliance officers can enter workplaces to inspect for safety.
- Four entry methods include:
- Courtesy inspections (requested by businesses).
- Periodic inspections with a predetermined time frame.
- Complaint-based inspections following worker reports.
- Inspections after deaths or hospitalizations of multiple workers (within 8 hours).
Exit Requirements
- Buildings must have sufficient exits for safe evacuation; no worker should travel over 150 ft to an exit.
- At least two exits must be available if one is obstructed.
- Exits must be clearly marked, illuminated, distinctive in color, and visible with readable signage (minimum 6 inches high).
Fire Extinguishers
- Employers must provide portable extinguishers appropriate for the hazards present.
- No worker should be more than 50 ft from an extinguisher; they must be unobstructed and easily visible.
- Annual maintenance is required, documented on extinguisher tags; training on proper use must be provided.
General Duty Clause
- Employers must maintain a workplace free from recognized hazards that could cause death or serious harm.
- New equipment and practices not explicitly covered in regulations are subject to this clause.
Hand Tools
- Employers must ensure the safe condition of all tools used by employees, including those owned by employees.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
- Employers must provide adequate PPE and ensure it's maintained properly and kept in good condition.
