Study Notes
Short Arm Volar Splint
- Indicated for stable wrist fractures or sprains.
- Effective for pediatric buckle or torus fractures of a single forearm bone.
- Suitable for metacarpal base and shaft fractures, excluding the 5th metacarpal.
- Used in carpal tunnel syndrome, lacerations, and as night splints.
Thumb Spica Splint
- Primarily used for thumb injuries, including navicular fractures, dislocations, and jammed thumbs.
- Also stabilizes thumb in cases of radial styloid fractures.
Ulnar Gutter Splint
- Designed for fractures of the 4th and 5th metacarpals.
Sugar Tong Splint
- Applicable for various upper extremity (UE) injuries, including Colles fractures.
- Treats isolated distal radius or ulna fractures, particularly in pediatric patients.
- Helps prevent pronation/supination and elbow extension.
- Ensure volar aspect is proximal enough to allow metacarpophalangeal (MCP) motion.
- Can be modified for specific forearm fractures.
Posterior Long Arm Splint
- Used for distal humerus and proximal forearm injuries:
- Supracondylar distal humerus fractures
- Radial head fractures
- Olecranon process fractures
- Maintain elbow at 90 degrees to prevent forearm movement.
- Thickness should support an ulnar gutter at the hand.
Posterior Ankle/Ankle Stirrup
- Used for managing ankle fractures, sprains, and strains.
Posterior Short Leg Splint
- Suitable for various foot fractures, particularly metatarsal and midfoot fractures, and Achilles injuries.
- Provides short-term immobilization; not very stable for extended periods.
- Extra padding required at the heel, toes, and where it stops at the tibial tubercle.
- Position ankle at 90 degrees to prevent gastrocnemius contractures.
- Commonly indicated for tibia/fibula, ankle, and metatarsal fractures.
U/L or Cadillac Splint
- Versatile splint for calcaneal fractures, lateral malleolar, bimalleolar fractures, severe ankle sprains, and Lisfranc injuries.
- Ensure a proper 90-degree positioning.
Medial-Lateral Long-Leg Splint
- Utilized for treating ligamentous injuries of the knee and fractures of the tibia and fibula.
Posterior Long Leg Splint
- Addresses ligamentous injuries at the knee, dislocations of the knee joint, and fractures of the tibia and fibula shafts, as well as femoral shaft fractures.
