Origins of Islam
- The Prophet Muhammad (570 - 632 CE) founded Islam.
- Muhammad was born and raised in Mecca, Arabia.
- Mecca was a center for pagan worship and had a well-known shrine.
- Muhammad was said to be illiterate, but he traveled extensively and came into contact with Jewish and Christian communities.
Early Islam
- In 610 CE, Muhammad received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel.
- Gabriel told Muhammad that Allah had a message for humanity and that earlier messages had been corrupted.
- Gabriel instructed Muhammad to memorize the message word-for-word in Arabic, his native language.
- Muhammad received many more messages from Allah over the next twenty years.
- His followers documented these messages into the Qur’an, the sacred holy book of Islam.
The Hegira and Expansion
- In 622 CE, Muhammad was forced to flee from Mecca to Medina, where his teachings were more readily accepted.
- This journey is known as the Hegira, and marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
- Muhammad and his followers established a community in Medina, and his followers grew to the tens of thousands.
- In 629 CE, Muhammad returned to Mecca and conquered the city.

The Rightly Guided Caliphs
- After Muhammad’s death in 632 CE, a series of four caliphs ruled Islam.
- These leaders are known as the Rightly Guided Caliphs.
- The first caliph, Abu Bakr, oversaw the continued expansion of Islam.
- The second caliph, Umar, expanded the territory of Islam into Iraq and Iran.

Later Dynasties and the Golden Age

- The Abbasid Dynasty (750-1258 CE) gained control of Islam and moved the capital to Baghdad.
- The Abbasids were known for their appreciation of learning, arts, and culture.
- They made Baghdad a center of learning and fostered advancements in astronomy, medicine, mathematics, and philosophy.
- This period, from 800-1250 CE, is known as the Islamic Golden Age.
The Mongol Invasion and the Crusades
- In 1258 CE, the Mongol Horde sacked Baghdad, ending the Abbasid Dynasty and the Islamic Golden Age.
- The Mongol Empire, the largest contiguous empire in history, also made inroads into Northern India, leading to the establishment of the Mughal Dynasty.
- The Christian Crusades, a series of attempts by European Christians to regain control of the Holy Land from Muslims, took place between the 11th and 13th centuries.
- Although the Crusades weakened the Abbasid Dynasty, they were ultimately unsuccessful.
- Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam, was lost permanently to Muslim forces in 1178 CE.
Modern Islam
- The Ottoman Empire, which controlled Turkey, flourished between 1320 and 1920 CE.
- In 1453, the Ottomans conquered Constantinople and renamed it Istanbul.
- The Ottoman Empire was finally defeated in World War I, but Turkey remains primarily Muslim.
- In Saudi Arabia, a strict form of Sunni Islam known as Wahhabism became influential in the 18th Century.
