Study Notes

Chemistry is a broad field of science concerned with matter and its interactions with energy. It can be divided into two main branches: Organic chemistry and Inorganic chemistry.

Organic chemistry deals primarily with carbon compounds and their derivatives, such as hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, esters, amines, aldehydes, ketones, acids, etc.. This branch includes the study of natural products like drugs, foodstuffs, and fibres derived from plants and animals. Some key concepts in organic chemistry include bonding, reactions, functional groups, stereochemistry, and spectroscopy. For example, one important reaction in organic chemistry is condensation polymerization where multiple monomers react together to form polymers.

In contrast, inorganic chemistry focuses more on atoms other than carbon, including elements like oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, selenium, tellurium, halogens, metals, metalloids, nonmetals, and many others. Important fundamental principles include atomic structure, phase behavior, thermodynamics, chemical equilibria, chemical kinetics, stoichiometry, and chemical equilibrium. One aspect of inorganic chemistry is crystal growth, which involves making crystals by controlling temperature, time, pressure, and composition during synthesis. Other aspects include complexes, oxides, and inorganic materials used in electronics.

These different areas of specialty within chemistry offer opportunities for scientists studying the properties of specific types of molecules. While both involve organic material and inorganic compounds, each has unique characteristics due to differences in molecular structures, electronegativity, charge distribution, and heteroatoms. Understanding these distinctions allows chemists to develop new materials tailored for various applications ranging from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics to plastics, batteries, solar panels, computers, and more.

Explore the fundamental principles and key concepts of organic and inorganic chemistry. Learn about carbon compounds, derivatives, natural products, reactions, functional groups, atomic structure, thermodynamics, crystal growth, and more.
