Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-containing molecules. These substances have numerous applications due to their diverse structures and properties. Let's explore some of the key organic compounds:

Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons are organic compounds composed entirely of hydrogen and carbon atoms. They can be divided into two classes: aliphatic and aromatic. Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with single bonds between all carbon atoms; they are nonpolar and generally less reactive. Examples include methane (CH4) and ethane (C2H6). Aromatic hydrocarbons contain planar molecular structures based on benzene rings, which exhibit resistance to oxidation.

Alcohols

Alcohols are another class of organic compounds containing hydroxyl groups (-OH) bonded to carbon chains. They can be primary (one -OH group), secondary (two -OH groups), tertiary (three -OH groups), or quaternary (four -OH groups). Alcohols are polar and can act as solvents, such as ethanol (C2H5OH) used in alcoholic beverages.

Amines

Amines are nitrogen-containing organic compounds where nitrogen replaces one of the hydrogen atoms attached to a carbon atom. They comprise both basic and acidic derivatives, depending on the degree of protonation of nitrogen's lone pair of electrons. Primary amines only have one nitrogen atom; examples are ethylamine (CH3CH2NH2) and dimethylamine ((CH3)2NH). Secondary amines have two nitrogen atoms; examples are diethylamine (C2H5NH(C2H5)) and dibutylamine ((C4H9)2NH). Tertiary amines have three nitrogen atoms; examples are triethylamine (Et2NH) and trimethylamine (Me3N). Quaternary amines have four nitrogen atoms; examples are tetramethylammonium ion (Me4N+) and tetraethylammonium ion (Et4N+).

Carbonyl Compounds

Carbonyl compounds, also called ketones, consist of a carbonyl group (RCO) and an R group. They often have a double bond between the oxygen atom and the carbon atom, making them polar. Common types of carbonyl compounds include simple ketones like acetone (propanone) and aldehydes like formaldehyde.

Carboxylic Acids

Carboxylic acids are a specific type of carbonyl compound that has a general structure of ROOC−H. An ester typically has the general formula RC(=O)OR'. Esters are notoriously polar substances because of their polarity. Well-known examples of carboxylic acids include acetic acid (CH3COOH), propanoic acid (CH3CH2COOH), butanoic acid (CH3CH2CH2COOH), and hexanoic acid (CH3CH2CH2CH2COOH).
