This involves studying the properties of functional groups such as alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, esters, amines, carboxylic acids, carbonyl compounds, and aromatic rings, among others. These functional groups form the building blocks of larger organic structures, allowing chemists to design new materials and create synthetic versions of natural products. For example, chemists learn how to make different chemical bonds like covalent and ionic bonds between atoms they want into different arrangements called molecular geometry, which helps them produce specific molecule shapes needed for certain purposes.
