Study Notes
CDL Requirements
- A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is necessary when driving vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
- Trailers exceeding 10,000 pounds when the total weight is above 26,000 pounds require a CDL.
- A CDL is needed for transporting 16 or more passengers, including the driver.
- Handling hazardous materials (HAZMAT) mandates a CDL.
- Business-related operation of motor homes or RVs above specified weight limits requires a CDL.
CDL Classifications
- Class A CDL permits operation of any vehicle combination.
- Class B CDL allows driving a single vehicle combined with a trailer weighing less than 10,000 pounds.
- Class C CDL is for vehicles carrying 16 or more passengers or those with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or less.
Exemptions from CDL
- Emergency vehicle operators on duty are exempt from CDL requirements.
- Military personnel driving military vehicles on duty do not need a CDL.
- Farmers and ranchers may also be exempt under certain conditions.
Vehicle Inspections
- Types of vehicle inspections include pre-trip, during trip, and post-trip inspections.
- During a trip, check tires, wheels, rims, brakes, lights, trailer couplings, and cargo security.
Tire and Brake Specifications
- Minimum tire tread depth is 4/32 inches on front tires and 2/32 inches on all other tires.
- Low oil pressure should be between 5-20 PSI at idle and 35-75 PSI during operation.
Driving Safety Practices
- Use 4-way flashers in situations such as tight turns or when stopping on the road.
- Maintain a safe distance while driving in work zones, where speeding traffic is a leading cause of injuries and fatalities.
- Time to look ahead while driving: 12-15 seconds or 1 block in the city, 1/4 mile on the open highway.
Emergency Procedures
- In case of tire failure, maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel and avoid braking.
- For returning to the road after leaving it, steer sharply to re-enter, then countersteer once back on pavement.
Skid Recovery Techniques
- To correct drive wheel skids, stop braking, steer towards the skid, then countersteer.
- For front wheel skids, release the accelerator and decrease speed.
Brake System Components
- Key components of air brake systems include the air compressor, storage tanks, and brake pedal.
- Parking brakes should be tested for effectiveness by ensuring the vehicle does not move when engaged.
Special Conditions
- Excessive heat can cause brake fade, reducing braking efficiency.
- Caution is needed on downgrades; factors such as vehicle weight and road conditions are crucial.
Hazard Awareness
- A hazard is any condition on the road that poses a potential danger.
- Aggressive driving disregards the safety of others, while road rage involves intent to physically harm.
Driving at Night
- Critical factors include vision, glare reduction, and maintaining alertness.
- Headlight ranges are approximately 250 feet for low beams and 350-500 feet for high beams.
Inspection Criteria
- Always conduct an inspection for tire, wheel, and brake issues before driving. Look for excessive wear, damage, and ensure proper air pressure.
Emergency Equipment Requirements
- Essential emergency equipment includes a fire extinguisher, spare fuses, and warning devices like reflective triangles.
