Order of the Eastern Star (OES) Overview

• Founded as the first secret society for women, promoting fellowship and charity.
• The Order was established in 1778.

Founders

• Robert Morris and Robert McCoy are recognized for founding the Order.

Symbolism and Inspiration

• The Star of Bethlehem serves as a key symbol of inspiration for the Order.
• The Open Bible symbolizes life and direction within the organization.

Mission and Values

• The mission of OES focuses on serving its members and the community.
• Core values emphasized include truth, love, charity, and kindness.

Chapter Operations

• A minimum of 7 members is required to open a chapter.
• Initiation of new members requires at least 9 individuals.

Meeting Protocols

• Balloting is the process used to maintain quality and selectivity among members ("keeping the weeds out").
• Reducing unnecessary motions and ensuring proper meeting conduct is indicated through raps:
  • One rap: Call to order or make a motion.
  • Two raps: Officers are to stand.
  • Three raps: This signifies all members should stand.

Organizational Structure

• The Grand Chapter is formally known as the Queen of Sheba Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star.
• The Grand Lodge is affiliated with the Most Worshipful Untitled Grand Lodge AF & AM of Illinois.

Leadership

• The current Grand Worthy Matron is Sherri Taylor White.
• Worthy Patron title held by Tommy L. Furrow, 33rd degree.

Meeting Frequency and Procedures

• The chapter meets in sorrow only once to acknowledge loss.
• The grand body convenes four times a year.

Chapter Requirements

• Each chapter must possess a charter, seal, record book, and appropriate financial documentation.
• There are seven ties that bind members to their obligations within the Order.

Degrees and Rites

• Completion of the OES adoptive rite involves three steps:
  • Order of Eastern Star
  • Queen of Star - South
  • Amiride - Crown Degree.
