Study Notes
Order of Operations (BEDMAS)
- Purpose: Ensures consistent problem-solving in mathematics, leading to a single correct answer.
BEDMAS (Acronym)
-
B - Brackets (Parentheses): Solve expressions inside brackets first.
- Example: In (5+3)×2, solve 5+3 = 8 first.
-
E - Exponents: Calculate any powers or square roots.
- Example: In 23+4, solve 23 = 8 first.
-
DM - Division and Multiplication (Left-to-Right): Solve division and multiplication from left to right.
- Example: In 12÷4×3, divide 12÷4=3 first, then multiply 3×3=9.
-
AS - Addition and Subtraction (Left-to-Right): Solve addition and subtraction from left to right.
- Example: In 7+5−3, add 7+5=12 first, then subtract 12-3=9.
Why is BEDMAS Important?
- Without BEDMAS, different people can get different answers for the same problem, which creates inconsistency in math.
- Example: In 8+2×3, BEDMAS tells us to multiply 2×3=6 first, then add 8+6=14. If order is ignored, the incorrect answer 30 results.
Left-to-Right Rule
- When solving division/multiplication or addition/subtraction problems, always proceed from left to right.
Example Problem Solving (6 + (4 × 32) − 5 ÷ 5)
-
Brackets/Parentheses: Solve 4 × 32. First solve 32 = 9, then 4×9=36
-
Division: Next solve 5÷5=1
-
Addition/Subtraction (left-to-right): Combine the remaining numbers: 6 + 36 - 1 = 41
-
Final Answer: 41
