To move the jaw

Glabella

What is the name of the fleshy protuberance at the inferior end of the helix?

Ear lobule

Darwin's tubercle

What is the name of the notch between the tragus and the antitragus?

Intertragic notch

Which muscle group is located in front of the cervical column?

Prevertebral muscles

What is the function of the vertebral canal within the cervical vertebral column?

It provides passage to the spinal cord

What is formed by the ventral rami of the first four cervical nerves?

Cervical plexus

Which of the following structures is NOT present in the neck region?

Knee joint

What is the function of the intervertebral foramina in the neck region?

It provides passage to the cervical spinal nerves

Which of the following is a neural structure present in the neck region?

Cervical plexus

What is the primary function of the musculature of the neck?

To produce an array of movements in the neck

What is depicted in Figure 1.11?

The basic layout of structures of the neck

Study Notes

Skull and Face

  • Eyebrows are raised arches of skin with short, thick hairs above the supraorbital margins.
  • The soft tissue covering frontal, parietal, and occipital regions forms the scalp.
  • Just deep to the eyebrow is the curved bony ridge or superciliary arch.

Scalp

  • The scalp is thickly covered by terminal hair, making it essential for clinicians to carefully examine this area for lesions.

Regions of the Skull

  • The parietal region is located near the hairline.
  • The frontal region is located above the eyebrows.
  • The orbital region is located around the eyes.
  • The temporal region is the area on the side of the skull between the temporal line and zygomatic arch.
  • The nasal region is located around the nose.
  • The auricular region is located around the ears.
  • The mental region is located around the chin.
  • The occipital region is located at the back of the skull.

Temporal Region

  • The temporal region is bounded by the temporal line and zygomatic arch.
  • The superficial temporal artery can be felt by placing a fingertip just in front and above the tragus on the root of zygoma.

Auricle (Ear)

  • The auricle has a superior and posterior free margin called the helix, which ends inferiorly at the fleshy protuberance called the ear lobule.
  • The upper end of the helix is typically at the level of the eyebrows and glabella.

Parotid Region

  • The parotid region is limited in front by the anterior border of masseter, behind by the mastoid process, and below by a line extending from the angle of the mandible to the tip of the mastoid process.
  • The mastoid process can be easily felt behind the lower part of the ear.

Neck

  • The neck is a complex region of the body containing the spinal cord, digestive and respiratory tracts, and major blood vessels.
  • The neural structures present in the region include the last four cranial nerves and cervical and brachial plexuses.
  • The musculature of the neck produces an array of movements in this area.

This quiz assesses your knowledge of oral anatomy and cranial nerves, focusing on regional features and lesions. It's designed to be easy to understand and engaging.
