Oppositional Defiant Disorder
- Characterized by a persistent pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behavior, or vindictiveness lasting at least 6 months.
- Diagnosed based on the presence of at least four symptoms from any of the following categories:
-
Angry/Irritable Mood:
- Frequent temper tantrums.
- Being easily annoyed and touchy.
- Feeling angry and resentful.
-
Argumentative/Defiant Behavior:
- Frequently arguing with authority figures (adults for children and adolescents).

- Intentionally annoying others.
- Blaming others for their own mistakes or misbehavior.
-

- Exhibiting spitefulness or vindictiveness at least twice within the past 6 months.
-
Angry/Irritable Mood:
- Children younger than 5 years must display the behavior on most days for at least 6 months.
- Individuals 5 years or older should display the behavior at least once per week for 6 months.
- The criteria provide a minimum level of frequency for defining symptoms. However, other factors like developmental level, gender, and cultural norms should also be considered.
- The disorder is associated with distress in the individual or those in their immediate social context.
- It negatively impacts social, educational, occupational, or other important functioning.
- The behaviors should not occur exclusively during psychotic, substance-use, depressive, or bipolar disorders.
- The diagnosis should be made after ruling out disruptive mood disorder.
- The disorder can be specified based on the severity:
- Mild: Symptoms are confined to one setting (home, school, work, peers).
- Moderate: Some symptoms are present in at least two settings.
- Severe: Some symptoms are present in three or more settings.
