Study Notes
Operant Conditioning
- Operant conditioning is a type of learning where behavior is strengthened or weakened by the consequences that follow it.
- It contrasts with classical conditioning, which involves associating two stimuli.
- In operant conditioning, the learner operates on the environment, and the consequences of that operation affect the likelihood of the behavior being repeated.
Skinner Box
- A Skinner box, also known as an operant conditioning chamber, is a controlled environment used to study operant conditioning in animals, most commonly rats and pigeons.
- It typically includes a lever or key that an animal can press or peck to receive a reward (reinforcer).
- The box often has mechanisms to record the animal's responses, such as the number of lever presses or pecks per minute, as well as timing of responses.
- Features of the box can be systematically manipulated to observe the effects.
Key Concepts in Operant Conditioning
-
Reinforcement: A consequence that strengthens a behavior.
- Positive reinforcement: Presenting a desirable stimulus after a behavior. Example: Giving a dog a treat after it sits.
- Negative reinforcement: Removing an unpleasant stimulus after a behavior. Example: Fastening a seatbelt to stop the beeping sound.
-
Punishment: A consequence that weakens a behavior.
- Positive punishment: Presenting an unpleasant stimulus after a behavior. Example: Spanking a child after misbehaving.
- Negative punishment: Removing a desirable stimulus after a behavior. Example: Taking away a teen's phone for breaking curfew.
- Shaping: Gradually guiding an animal or person towards a desired behavior by rewarding successive approximations of that behavior.
- Extinction: Gradual weakening and disappearance of a learned response when the behavior is no longer reinforced.
- Generalization: Responding similarly to a new stimulus that is similar to the original stimulus associated with reinforcement.
- Discrimination: Responding differently to stimuli that are different from the original stimulus associated with reinforcement.
Schedules of Reinforcement
- Continuous reinforcement: Reinforcing a behavior every time it occurs. Quick learning but likely to result in faster extinction.
-
Intermittent reinforcement: Reinforcing a behavior only some of the time. Slower initial learning, but more resistant to extinction.
- Fixed-ratio schedule: Reinforcement after a specific number of responses.
- Variable-ratio schedule: Reinforcement after a varying number of responses. Often leads to high and steady rates of response as the animal never knows when the next reward will come.
- Fixed-interval schedule: Reinforcement after a specific period of time. Leads to a response rate that increases as the time interval gets closer to its end.
- Variable-interval schedule: Reinforcement after a varying period of time. Leads to a steady response rate as the time to reinforcement never is predictable.
Applications of Operant Conditioning
- Therapy: Used in behavioral therapy to modify maladaptive behaviors in humans.
- Education: Used to encourage desired learning behaviors.
- Parenting: Effective when used to alter children's behaviors in appropriate ways.
- Animal training: Used to teach animals new tricks or behaviors through positive reinforcement techniques.
- Industrial settings: Used to improve work performance using positive reinforcement.
