- Purpose: The City of Omaha aims to create a safe, healthy workplace, and promote employee and customer well-being.
- Policy: Smoking (in all forms) is prohibited in all City facilities and vehicles.
- Definitions:
- City Facility: Any indoor office space, work area, or public location owned, leased, or rented by the City.
- Smoking: The act of burning, inhaling, exhaling smoke from, or possessing a lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe, or other smoking substance, or inhaling/exhaling smoke/vapor from an electronic smoking device (e.g., e-cigarette).
- Vehicle: Any City-owned, leased, or rented self-propelled vehicle.
- Enforcement:
- Department heads/supervisors ensure no smoking in facilities/vehicles.
- Methods:
- Posting appropriate signs
- Asking smokers to refrain from smoking citing the Nebraska Clean Indoor Air Act, City ordinances, and this policy.
- Violations: Violators may face Class V misdemeanor charges under Nebraska law. Other disciplinary actions may be taken including disciplinary action for City employees, as dictated by internal union contracts or Chapter 23 of the Omaha Municipal Code.
