  • In 1947, India became independent, and the British Indian Empire was partitioned into India and Pakistan. Gandhi opposed the official celebration of independence and visited areas affected by religious violence.
  • In 1948, he began a long fast to pressure the Indian government to pay Pakistan some cash assets. He completed the fast in January 1949.
  • Gandhi died on January 30, 1948, at the age of 80.
