Unit 2: Windows 10 Operating System - Lesson 3

  • Topic: Managing Folders and Files, and Computer Settings (Folders and Files)

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to manage folders and files.
  • Students will be able to manage computer settings.

File Explorer Interface

  • File Explorer Window Components:
    • Ribbon: Contains commonly used commands for files and folders.
    • Navigation and Search Bar: Located below the Ribbon, allows for navigation and searching within folder structures.
    • Navigation Pane: On the left, provides easy access to computer storage, documents, images, storage devices, and network devices. Also includes a Quick Access section for frequently used folders.
    • Contents Pane: The main area on the right, displays the contents of the selected folder or storage location.

Ribbon

  • File Tab: Contains options for managing the File Explorer window and customizing it.
  • Home Tab: Contains most tools needed for organizing files and folders.
  • Share Tab: Includes options for sharing, emailing, printing, and compressing files or folders.
  • View Tab: Contains options for changing the display method for File Explorer.
  • Navigation Buttons: Back, Forward, and Up buttons allow for easy navigation through recently opened folder locations.
  • Address Bar: Displays the icon and complete path of the current folder.
  • Refresh Button: Updates the display of the contents section.
  • Search Box: Enables searching for folders and files within Windows 10.
  • Quick Access: Contains links to frequently accessed folders and libraries. Users can add frequently used folders here.
  • This PC: Contains links to user-specific folders and installed/connected storage locations.
  • Network: Displays other computers connected to the local network.

Contents Pane

  • Frequent Folders: Lists recently used folders for quick access.
  • Recent Files: Lists recently opened files and documents

Pinning to Quick Access

  • To pin a drive, folder, library, or location to Quick Access:
    • Select the desired folder in File Explorer.
    • Click the Home tab on the Ribbon.
    • Click the Pin to Quick Access button in the Clipboard section of the Home tab.

Clipboard Group (Copy, Paste, Cut)

  • Copy: Creates a duplicate of the selected item.
  • Cut: Moves the selected folder or file.
  • Paste: Pastes the copied or cut item in the selected location.

Organize Group (Move, Copy)

  • To move or copy a file or folder:
    • Select the file or folder in File Explorer.
    • Click the Home tab on the Ribbon.
    • In the Organize group, click the Move to or Copy to button.
    • A drop-down menu appears with common locations.
    • Choose a location.
    • Navigate to the desired destination folder.

Delete Feature

  • To delete a file or folder:
    • Select the file or folder in File Explorer.
    • Click the Home tab on the Ribbon.
    • Click the Delete button in the Organize group.
    • A drop-down menu appears to choose between permanently deleting the file or moving it to the Recycle Bin.

Restore from Recycle Bin

  • To restore a file or folder from the Recycle Bin:
    • Open the Recycle Bin.
    • Select the desired file or folder.
    • Select Restore Selected Items in the Manage tab. The item will return to its original location.

Rename Feature

  • To rename a file or folder:
    • Select the file or folder in the Contents pane.
    • The name of the item will be highlighted.
    • Edit the name and press Enter.

New Folder

  • To create a new folder:
    • Click the Home tab in File Explorer.
    • In the New group, click New Folder.
    • Type the name of the new folder and press Enter.

Creating a New Item

  • To create a new file:
    • Click the Home tab in File Explorer.
    • In the New group, click the New Item drop-down menu.
    • Select the desired file type.
    • Type the name of the new file and press Enter.

Select All

  • To select all items in a folder:
    • Click the Home tab in File Explorer.
    • In the Select group, click Select All.

Selecting Multiple Items

  • Consecutive Selection: Select the first item and hold down SHIFT while selecting the last item in the sequence.
  • Non-Consecutive Selection: Select the first item and hold down CTRL while selecting additional items to add to the selection.

View Tab

  • Panes Group: Allows to show/hide the Navigation Pane and select between Preview Pane and Details Pane.
  • Layout Group: Changes the view of the icons.
  • Current View Group: Arranges the icons in a different order.
  • Show/Hide Group: Displays or hides various options associated with files and folders.

Working With Libraries

  • To display Libraries in the Navigation pane:
    • Click the View tab in File Explorer.
    • Click the Navigation Pane button in the Panes group.
    • Select Show Libraries.

Adding Folders to Libraries

  • To add a folder to an existing library:
    • Click Libraries in the Navigation pane.
    • Click Manage Library.
    • Click Add.
    • Browse for the folder to include.
    • Click Include Folder.

Time & Language Settings

  • Open Windows Settings: Click Settings from the Start menu.

    • Navigate to Time & Language Settings.

Adding a Language

  • To add a language:
    • Open Windows Settings.
    • Go to Time & Language > Region & Language > Languages.
    • Click Add a language.
    • Choose the desired language and settings.

System Information

  • To view System Information:
    • Open Windows Settings.
    • Navigate to System > About.
    • Displays PC name, edition, version, product ID, processor, installed RAM, and system type
