OET Overview

The Occupational English Test (OET) is a global test of listening, reading, writing and speaking skills used by healthcare professionals who seek to register and practice in an English-speaking environment. It is designed specifically for the healthcare sector and assesses all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – with an emphasis on communication in medical and health professional settings. The OET has been developed by Cambridge English Language Assessment with input from leading healthcare professions.

Importance of OET

Healthcare Professionals

Healthcare workers need to have good command over English because they must communicate effectively during their work. In addition, the ability to express themselves well can help them build rapport and trust with their patients. Many countries require foreign doctors and nurses to take this exam before they can legally work in a hospital or clinic there.

Structure of OET

The OET consists of four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Candidates can choose which OET sections they wish to take in one session. There is also flexibility in how candidates take the tests - either together in one day or spread out over several days.

Scoring System

Each part of the OET is marked out of 9. These marks are combined to give an overall score out of 36. The results are reported in terms of bands from A+ to E. Band scores can be converted into CEFR levels.

Preparing for OET

Candidates can prepare for the OET through self-study or with the help of a teacher. The official OET website provides study materials, including sample tests and guides on how to approach different tasks. Additionally, some language schools offer courses specifically designed to prepare students for the OET.
