Human Information Processing (HIP)

• HIP is a cognitive model that explains how people process information
• Focuses on the mental processes involved in perception, attention, memory, and decision-making

Three Stages of HIP

1. Sensory Memory: brief storage of sensory information in the brain
   • Capacity: unlimited
   • Duration: 1-2 seconds
2. Short-Term Memory (STM): temporary storage of information in working memory
   • Capacity: 7 ± 2 chunks of information
   • Duration: 15-30 seconds
3. Long-Term Memory (LTM): permanent storage of information in the brain
   • Capacity: unlimited
   • Duration: permanent

Information Processing Steps

1. Perception: detection and interpretation of sensory information
2. Encoding: transformation of sensory information into a form that can be stored in memory
3. Storage: retention of information in memory
4. Retrieval: access and recall of information from memory
5. Response: generation of a response based on retrieved information

Types of Information Processing

Serial Processing

• Information is processed one step at a time
• Linear processing, one task at a time

Parallel Processing

• Information is processed simultaneously in multiple channels
• Multiple tasks can be processed at the same time

Levels of Processing Framework

• Shallow (structural) processing: focus on surface-level features
• Deep (semantic) processing: focus on meaning and significance

Dual-Code Theory

• Verbal information is processed in the left hemisphere of the brain
• Visual information is processed in the right hemisphere of the brain
