Unit Information

• Projects typically need to be delivered within a defined timescale. Providing robust estimates, monitoring and controlling project duration is crucial to understand the ongoing viability of the investment made in a project.
• This unit provides students with a background in advanced scheduling and estimation techniques, supported by project management software.

Objectives of this Unit of Study

• Teaches fundamental knowledge about scheduling, a project planning process focussed on time, cost and resource management.
• Is central to project management, integrating activities, time, cost, resources and constraints to plan work to create deliverables.
• A critical process aiming to ensure the timely and cost-effective completion of a project while maintaining quality and managing resources efficiently.
• A well-defined, clear and complete schedule ensures timely completion of planned work

Learning Outcomes

• Select appropriate planning and scheduling approaches for different project types.
• Understand different formats of project schedules, such as precedence diagrams and Gantt charts.
• Demonstrate competence in the creation of project schedules manually and using commonly used computer software.
• Demonstrate the ability to construct feasible project schedules under resource constraints.
• Demonstrate the ability to track and manage costs and task progress using scheduling tools.
• Demonstrate the ability to extract relevant management reporting information from scheduling tools.
