Transition to Practice 16Q's: Obtaining Nursing Credentials
- To obtain nursing credentials, the SBON (presumably a State Board of Nursing) verifies three components:
- Graduation from an approved prelicensure RN program
- Successful completion of the NCLEX-RN exam
- A criminal background check
Resume
- Highlight background, education, skills, and accomplishments for potential employers.
Portfolio
- A collection of materials showcasing previous work, demonstrating skills and experience.
Strategies for Successful Interviews
- Prepare answers to common interview questions beforehand.
- Research the organization, including mission, vision, and current events.
- Dress professionally, reduce distractions, maintain eye contact, speak confidently, and ask questions.
Reality Shock (4 Phases)
- Honeymoon Phase: The new RN is excited and everything seems positive when paired with a preceptor.
- Shock Phase: The RN becomes more vulnerable and independent; the new role's difficulty is realized, leading to potential negative feelings and job risk.
- Recovery Phase: Positive feelings return as the RN reflects on the experience and anxiety decreases.
- Resolution Phase: The final phase, usually occurring after one year.
How to Help with Transition
- Be aware of "reality shock" and provide orientation (1-4 months).
- Preceptors should serve as role models and resources.
- Nurse residency programs should create learning opportunities, address nursing skills, and provide mentorship.
