Bed Making Procedure
- Perform hand hygiene to avoid the spread of microorganisms before making the bed.
- Gather fresh linens and place them on a chair at the foot of the bed.
- Loosen the linens on one side of the bed, starting from the top near the head down to the feet.
- Help the patient turn onto their side (lateral position) for a moment, and raise the side rail for safety.
- Loosen the linens at the foot area, and fold or roll the soiled linens neatly towards the patient's back.
- Spread out the fresh bottom sheet, tucking the extra length at the head and sides securely.
- Add a rubber sheet and draw sheet on top of the bottom sheet for extra protection and comfort.
- Lay down the clean top sheet, tucking the excess at the foot and making sure the corners are nicely folded.
- Replace the soiled top sheet with a fresh one, and remove the old sheet without inconvenience.
Changing Pillowcase and Finishing Touches
- Change the pillowcase, using the old one as a temporary hamper for the soiled linens.
- Place the clean pillow on the freshly made side of the bed and help the patient move to this side.
- Raise the side rail again for safety.
- Tidy up the other side of the bed by rolling up the soiled linens and putting them in the hamper in the correct order.
- Place the soiled rubber sheet between the bed railings at the foot of the bed to protect the mattress and keep everything clean.
- Pull out each clean linen one by one and tuck them in according to sequence, creating a toe pleat at the top sheet for ample space.
- Help position the patient comfortably in the middle of the bed.
- Adjust the bed rails as needed based on the patient's condition for their safety.
- Offer the patient the option to have the side rails up or down.
- Ensure all clean linens are tucked in nicely for the patient's comfort.
