Study Notes

Bag Technique

  • Ensure proper disposal of waste receptacle and its contents before leaving the home to prevent contamination.
  • The bag technique is a tool used by nurses during home visits to perform nursing procedures efficiently and effectively.

Nursing Bag Contents

  • Articles for infection control: • Soap in a covered soap dish • Linen or disposable paper towels for hand washing • Apron • Bottles of antiseptics • Hand sanitizer
  • Articles for assessment of family members: • Body thermometer(s) • Measuring tape • Newborn weighing scale • Portable diagnostic aids (e.g. glucometer) • Items for Benedict's test (e.g. Benedict's solution, medicine dropper, test tube, test tube holder, alcohol lamp)
  • Note: Sphygmomanometer and stethoscope are carried separately.
  • Articles for nursing care: • Sterile items (e.g. dressings, cotton balls, cotton tip applicators, syringes, surgical gloves, cord clamp, surgical scissors, sterile pack with kidney basin, forceps) • Clean articles (e.g. adhesive tape, bandage scissors) • Pieces of paper (e.g. for lining the soap dish, for lining the bag, folded paper for waste receptacle)

Principles of Bag Technique

  • The bag should contain all necessary articles and supplies.
  • The bag and its contents should be cleaned and replaced as necessary.
  • The bag and its contents should be protected from contact with contaminated items.
  • Consider the bag and its contents as clean and/or sterile, while patient's items are considered dirty and contaminated.

Bag Technique Procedure

  • Place the bag on a flat surface and line it with a paper.
  • Ask for water to wash hands or ask where to wash them.
  • Open the bag and take out the double-wrapped soap.
  • Wash hands with soap and water, then wipe them dry.
  • Place used wash cloth between the double wrappers.
  • Put out necessary equipment (e.g. thermometer, apron, dressing, instruments) on the spread towel lining.
  • Put on the apron, then place the waste receptacle outside the paper lining.
  • Proceed with specific nursing care or treatment.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment, then re-wrap the soap dish.
  • Wash hands again with soap and water.
  • Open the bag, return all equipment to their proper order, and close the bag.
  • Record observations, temperature, treatment done, and specific instructions.

Urine Test for Albumin

  • Collect urine specimen in the morning, before breakfast, and after external douche.
  • Fill a test tube 2/3 or 3/4 full with urine and place it in a kidney basin.
  • Light the alcohol lamp and heat the upper portion of the test tube.
  • Remove the thermometer and wipe it with a tissue.
  • Read the temperature and record it on the worksheet (if needed).
  • If the temperature is obviously too high, too low, or inconsistent with the client's condition, recheck it with a thermometer known to be functioning properly.
  • If the temperature is rectal, it must be taken to check the patency of the rectum.

Urine Test for Sugar

  • Measure 5 ml of Benedict's solution in a medicine glass.
  • Put the solution inside the test tube.
  • Light the alcohol lamp and heat the solution until it boils.
  • Add 8 drops of urine and boil the mixture for 5 minutes, shaking the tube at the same time.
  • End of boiling, add 5 drops of acetic acid to confirm the presence of albumin in the urine.
  • If cloudiness disappears after boiling, the urine is negative for albumin. If cloudiness remains, it is positive for albumin.
  • Place used dropper in the waste receptacle.
  • Do after care.

This quiz covers the essential items to include in a nursing bag and the key principles to consider when using it. It's perfect for nursing students or professionals looking to refresh their knowledge on nursing care equipment and emergency preparedness.
