Nursing Administration and Leadership
- Management is a distinct process consisting of planning, organizing, actuating and controlling, to accomplish the objectives by the use of people and resources.
- Management is what a manager does.
- To manage is to forecast and plan, to organize, to command, to co-ordinate and to control.
Henri Fayol’s Principles of Management
- Division of work: Specialization increases output.
- Authority and responsibility: Authority is the right to give orders and responsibility is the obligation to carry them out.
- Discipline: Employees must obey and respect the rules.
- Unity of command: An employee should receive orders from only one superior.
- Unity of direction: All efforts must be directed towards the same objective.
- Subordination of individual interest: The individual interest should not be placed above the interests of the organization.
- Remuneration: Employees must receive a fair wage for their services.
- Centralization: The degree to which decision-making power is concentrated at the top of the organization.
- Scalar chain: The chain of command from the top of the organization to the bottom.
- Order: Every employee and everything in the organization must have a place and everyone must be in their place.
- Stability: A stable workforce is essential for organizational success.
- Equity: Employees should be treated with fairness and justice.
- Initiative: Employees should be encouraged to take initiative.

Formal and Informal Organization
