Whole Numbers - 2 Digit Numbers

  • Ten is equal to one ten or ten units (ones).
  • Twelve is equal to one ten and two units, or ten units and two units.
  • Thirteen equals one ten and three units.
  • Sixteen equals one ten and six units.
  • Nineteen equals one ten and nine units.
  • Thirty equals three tens or thirty units.
  • Forty equals four tens or forty units.
  • Seventy equals seven tens or seventy units
  • Ninety equals nine tens or ninety units.
  • Twenty equals two tens or twenty units.

Place Value

  • Numbers are composed of units (ones) and tens.
  • The units digit is the rightmost digit in a number.
  • The tens digit is the digit to the left of the units digit.
  • Example: In the number 25, 5 is the units digit and 2 is the tens digit.

Expanded Form

  • Writing a number as a sum of its place values.
  • Example: 58 is equal to 5 tens plus 8 units (50 +8) , or 50 + 8 = 58.

Short Form

  • Converting expanded form back to standard form.
  • Example: 40 + 3 = 43, two tens plus five units equals 25.
