Cumulative Data

Graphs showing data accumulating over time. Previous values are added to new observations.

Calculate Period Sales

To find the sales for a specific period, subtract the cumulative sales of the prior period from the cumulative sales. The graph provides sales data cumulatively.

Combined Sales

Calculate the difference between the July cumulative sales and April cumulative sales to find combined sales. Remember the numbers in the graph are cumulative.

Comparing Sales Figures

Determine the number of Bernd cars sold in June. Compare with how many Bernd cars were actually sold in July.

Study Notes

  • This is Numerical Reasoning Test 1 and contains solutions.
  • The test contains 12 questions to be answered in 15 minutes.
  • Only one of the four possible answers for each question is correct.
  • Calculators and rough paper are allowed for calculations.

Question 1

  • The question requires recognizing that sales figures are cumulative.
  • Bernd cumulative sales at the end of April are 9,000.
  • Bernd cumulative sales at the end of May are 10,000.
  • Therefore, Bernd cars sold in May = 10,000 - 9,000 = 1,000.

Question 2

  • To find the total sales of Tymko cars for May, June, and July combined, calculate (cumulative sales for end of July) – (cumulative sales end of April).
  • (Cumulative sales July) – (Cumulative sales April) = 21,000 - 15,000 = 6,000.

Question 3

  • To determine how many more Bernd cars would have been sold during July if sales equaled June, first find Bernd cars sales in June, which is 1,000.
  • Compare this with actual July sales of Bernd cars which are 0.
  • The difference is 1,000 - 0 = 1,000 cars.

Question 4

  • In Liverpool, the starting population in 2000 was 500,000.
  • There were 13.4 births per thousand, totaling (500 x 13.4) = 6,700 births.
  • There were 12.4 deaths per thousand, totaling (500 x 12.4) = 6,200 deaths.
  • The net effect on population is 6,700 – 6,200 = 500 increase.

Question 5

  • To calculate combined live births in Birmingham and Glasgow in 2000:
  • Birmingham had 995 x 13.6 = 13,532 births.
  • Glasgow had 600 x 13.8 = 8,280 births.
  • In total, there were 13,532 + 8,280 = 21,812 births.

Question 6

  • To find which city had the lowest number of people under 15 at the start of 2000, calculate for each city.
  • Birmingham: 995 x 0.18 = 179.1
  • Glasgow: 600 x 0.21 = 126
  • Liverpool: 500 x 0.22 = 110
  • Leeds: 450 x 0.23 = 103.5
  • Leeds had the lowest number.

Question 7

  • Percentage increase in public transport spending from 2007 to 2008 is calculated by:
  • UK: 38 ÷ 35 = 8.57% increase
  • US: 136 ÷ 128 = 6.25% increase
  • Germany: 46 ÷ 44 = 4.55% increase
  • Italy: 28 ÷ 26 = 7.69% increase
  • The UK experienced the largest increase.

Question 8

  • To find which country had the highest public transport spend per capita in 2008, divide public transport spend by the population.
  • UK: 38 ÷ 60.1 = 0.632
  • US: 136 ÷ 302.5 = 0.450
  • Germany: 46 ÷ 84.3 = 0.546
  • The UK had the highest spend per capita.

Question 9

  • In 2007, Italy's target spending was 8% more than in 2006.
  • Italy spent £25 billion in 2006, so the target was £25 billion x 1.08 = £27 billion.
  • Italy actually spent £26 billion, so they were £1 billion short of the target.

Question 10

  • To address the question of which website's visitors were most likely to make purchases, calculate the percentage of purchasers from each:
  • Website W: 2,876 ÷ 315,380 = 0.912%
  • Website X: 284 ÷ 26,850 = 1.06%
  • Website Y: 183 ÷ 82,520 = 0.222%
  • Website Z: 204 ÷ 12,630 = 1.62%
  • Website Z visitors were most likely to make a purchase.

Question 11

  • To find the approximate difference in profit between Website X and Website Y visitors:
  • Calculate the difference in sales: 284 - 183 = 101 more sales from Website X.
  • Multiply by the average profit per sale: 101 x £12 = £1,212.

Question 12

  • To calculate the percentage of visitors from Website Y:
  • Add up the number of visitors 315,380 + 26,850 + 82,520 + 12,630 = 437,380.
  • Calculate the percentage: 82,520 ÷ 437,380 = 18.87%.
