Study Notes
Number Systems
- Integers: Whole numbers, including zero, and their opposites (negative numbers). The set includes ..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
- Rational Numbers: Numbers that can be expressed as a fraction p/q, where p and q are integers and q is not zero. Examples include whole numbers, fractions, and decimals that terminate or repeat.
- Irrational Numbers: Numbers that cannot be expressed as a fraction of two integers. Their decimal representations neither terminate nor repeat. Examples include √2, π.
- Real Numbers: The set of all rational and irrational numbers.
Operations with Integers
- Addition: Add numbers with the same sign, then add their absolute values. Add numbers with different signs, subtract their absolute values, and give the answer the sign of the larger absolute value.
- Subtraction: Change the sign of the number being subtracted, and add the numbers.
- Multiplication: Multiply as usual. If the signs are the same, the product is positive. If the signs are different, the product is negative.
- Division: Divide as usual. If the signs are the same, the quotient is positive. If the signs are different, the quotient is negative.
Order of Operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS)
- Parentheses (or Brackets)
- Exponents (or Orders)
- Multiplication and Division (from left to right)
- Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)
Fractions
- Equivalent Fractions: Fractions that represent the same part of a whole.
- Simplifying Fractions: Dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor (GCF).
- Adding and Subtracting Fractions: Find a common denominator.
- Multiplying Fractions: Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators.
- Dividing Fractions: Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
Decimals
- Place Value: Understanding the value of each digit based on its position.
- Converting between Fractions and Decimals: Express fractions as decimals by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
- Adding and Subtracting Decimals: Line up the decimal points.
- Multiplying and Dividing Decimals: Multiply or divide as usual, then place the decimal point in the product or quotient.
Exponents
- Definition: Shows repeated multiplication of the base number by itself.
- Properties of Exponents: Rules for working with exponents, including the product rule, quotient rule, power of a power rule, and zero and negative exponents.
Equations and Inequalities
- Equations: Statements that two expressions are equal.
- Solving Equations: Finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true.
- Inequalities: Statements that compare two expressions using symbols like <, >, ≤, ≥.
- Solving Inequalities: Finding the values of the variable that make the inequality true.
Geometry
- Geometric Shapes: Understanding different shapes like triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, etc.
- Perimeter: The distance around a two-dimensional shape.
- Area: The amount of space inside a two-dimensional shape.
- Volume: The amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional shape.
- Different units for measuring (cm, m, km, etc.)
- Understanding relationships between different shapes (e.g., Pythagorean theorem for right triangles)
Measurement
- Units of Length, Volume, and Mass: Knowing common units (cm, m, km, liters, grams, kilograms, etc).
- Converting Between Units: Multiply or divide to convert from one unit to another.
- Accurate Measurements
Data Analysis
- Data Collection: Gathering information.
- Representing Data: Using graphs (bar graphs, line graphs, histograms, etc.)
