Nominal Sentence Test

Predicate Nominatives

  • A predicate nominative is a noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb
  • It renames or re-identifies the subject
  • Examples:
    • "She is a doctor." (Here, "doctor" is a predicate nominative)
    • "He became a teacher." (Here, "teacher" is a predicate nominative)

Sentence Structure

  • A nominal sentence typically has a simple sentence structure:
    • Subject + Linking Verb + Predicate Nominative
  • Examples:
    • "John is a student." (S + LV + PN)
    • "The city is the capital." (S + LV + PN)

Noun Phrases

  • A noun phrase is a phrase that functions as a single noun in a sentence
  • In a nominal sentence, a noun phrase can be a predicate nominative
  • Examples:
    • "The manager of the company is John." (Here, "The manager of the company" is a noun phrase and a predicate nominative)
    • "The winner of the award is her." (Here, "The winner of the award" is a noun phrase and a predicate nominative)

Sentence Fragments

  • A sentence fragment is a group of words that does not form a complete sentence
  • In a nominal sentence test, identifying sentence fragments is important to ensure that the sentences are complete and grammatically correct
  • Examples:
    • "The teacher." (This is a sentence fragment, not a complete sentence)
    • "The book on the table." (This is a sentence fragment, not a complete sentence)

Adjective Clauses

  • An adjective clause is a dependent clause that functions as an adjective
  • In a nominal sentence, an adjective clause can provide more information about the predicate nominative
  • Examples:
    • "The city, which is the capital, is beautiful." (Here, "which is the capital" is an adjective clause modifying the predicate nominative "city")
    • "The student, who is very smart, is John." (Here, "who is very smart" is an adjective clause modifying the predicate nominative "student")

اركان الجملة الاسمية (Elements of a Nominal Sentence)

  • In Arabic, a nominal sentence (جملة اسمية) typically consists of:
    • مُبْتَدَأ (mubtada') - the subject
    • خَبَر (khabar) - the predicate nominative
    • رَفْع (raf') - the linking verb
  • Examples:
    • "أنا تلميذ." (Here, "أنا" is the subject, "تلميذ" is the predicate nominative, and the implied verb "أكون" is the linking verb)
    • "هو مدير الشركة." (Here, "هو" is the subject, "مدير الشركة" is the predicate nominative, and the implied verb "يكون" is the linking verb)
