Study Notes

Kabanata 25: Sa Bahay ng Pantas

  • Crisostomo Ibarra goes to Pilosopong Tasyo’s house to ask for advice.

  • Tasio says to not go to him again for advice as people will think that he is insane as well, and pretend to agree with the higher-ups so that he has their favor and they think they have control.

Kabanata 26: Bisperas ng Kasintahan

  • The festivities in San Diego are very colorful, with local and foreign food, plays and musicals, and large bamboo arches.

  • The foundation of Ibarra’s school is continuing to be built.

Kabanata 27: Kinagabihan

  • Maria Clara receives a reliquary necklace from her father as a gift.

  • When Ibarra, Maria Clara, and their friends go out on the streets to look at the decorations, they come across a blind, begging leper. Filled with sympathy, Maria Clara gives him the necklace.

  • Sisa arrives and touches the leper. She then goes on a confused rant about her two sons, the golden coins, and her garden. Not long after, she is then arrested for disrupting the festival.

Kabanata 28: Mga Sulat

  • Three letters appear. The first one is from a magazine writer to his editor in Manila, describing the colorful events happening in San Diego.

  • The second is addressed to G. Chiquito by K. Martin, talking about the gambling events.

  • The last letter is from Maria Clara to Ibarra, who presumably became sick.

Kabanata 29: Ang Araw ng Pista

  • Padre Salvi, in charge of the procession, starts it early. However, it is also stopped early as a baby calls out, “Pa-pa, pa-pa” to the Padre.

  • The previous pale father blushes, and the people begin to think dirty things about Padre Salvi.

Kabanata 30: Sa Simbahan

  • After the procession, the people go inside the mass, anticipating the sermon of a certain priest, which they paid P250 for.

  • Pilosopong Tasyo remarks that they are (too) rich, and that only a third of the entire contribution to the sermon was received by the performers from the previous days.

Kabanata 31: Ang Sermon

  • In his sermon, Padre Damaso talks about [mga ayaw mangungumpisal, kaluluwa, impiyerno, at kamunduhan ng tao.

  • His sermon also discreetly targets Crisostomo Ibarra.

  • After the mass, Elias warns Ibarra about the blessing ceremony later. He tells Ibarra to not go down into the trench, as his life depends on it.

Kabanata 32: Ang Panghugos

  • In the blessing ceremony of Ibarra’s school, the people admire a machine (panghuhukay) that the yellow man created.

  • All things go well until Ibarra goes under the machine (carrying a rock), and the machine drops a piece of rock/stone, supposedly killing Ibarra. However, it is the yellow man who actually dies.

  • The yellow man’s motivation for killing Ibarra is because of the latter’s grandfather, Don Saturnino:

    • He knows how to use a whip.

    • He knows how to tie people to a heater.

    • He knows how to awaken the sleepy,

    • and make the awake sleep.

      • In other words, Don Saturnino is a cruel man and abused his (students), one of which was the yellow man’s father.

Kabanata 33: Malayang Isipan

  • Here, Elias visits Ibarra and they talk about the people who target Ibarra, including their letters.

  • Ibarra learns that Elias actually knows a lot about life.

Kabanata 34: Pananghalian

  • To their immense dismay, Padre Damaso enters the scene, continuing his sermon. He mentions Ibarra’s father (presumably in a negative light), which causes Ibarra to target Damaso and almost kills him.

  • Maria Clara luckily intercepts in time, and Ibarra runs away, covering his face.

Kabanata 35: Reaksyon

  • Word travels fast in the town of San Diego, and what happened to Padre Damaso was no exception.

  • There were mixed reactions about Ibarra almost killing Padre Damaso:

    1. They thought that Padre Damaso was dead.

    2. They agreed with Ibarra’s actions, since family should always be respected.

    3. They disagreed with Ibarra’s actions, and thought that he should have apologized longer.

Kabanata 36: Ang Unang Suliranin

  • Because of his actions, Ibarra was excommunicated from the church.

  • Kapitan Tiyago was told by Padre Salvi to separate the lovers, Ibarra and Maria Clara.

  • Maria Clara felt this deeply, as she cried the entire afternoon.

Kabanata 37: Ang Kapitan-Heneral

  • The former promised to help Ibarra in his project and remove any obstacles that would hinder its success.

  • He also praised Kapitan Tiyago for having a beautiful daughter.

  • The Captain General told Ibarra that he would like to be the godfather / ninang when he gets married to Maria Clara.

Kabanata 38: Ang Prusisyon

  • The Captain General and Ibarra go and attend a procession filled with parades and people.

  • Along the way, Ibarra hears a sweet, sad song coming from Kapitan Tiyago’s house. He also grows somber.

Kabanata 39: Si Donya Consolacion

  • Donya Consolacion is the wife of the alperes. She used to be a laundry woman (labandera), but now, she picks violent and loud fights with her husband.

  • One day, she sees Sisa singing, and she orders the guardia civil to get/capture her.

  • She makes Sisa sing and dance at home. If she doesn’t, the Donya whips her. Moreover, she also intentionally butchers her Filipino to say that she is an orofea (a person who doesn’t know how to speak Filipino that well).

  • This whole ordeal is because the alperes doesn’t want to show Donya Consolacion in public. The Donya gets furious, and takes it out on Sisa.

Kabanata 40: Ang Karapatan at Kapangyarihan

    2. Alperes at Donya Consolacion: Dahil nag-aaway sina Alperes at Donya Consolacion, pinipigilan ng guwardia civil ang musikero.

    3. Musikero at Guwardia Sibil: Pinipigilan ng guwardia sibil ang mga musikero, ngunit hininto ang gulo dahil kay Elias.

Kabanata 41: Dalawang Dalawa

  • Two people came across Ibarra.

  • The first was Elias, who told Ibarra that Maria Clara was sick and asked for any instructions before he went to Batangas.

  • The second was Lucas, who pestered Ibarra about the money to be compensated for the family of his brother who died (the yellow man). Ibarra walked away, to prevent him from getting mad, and Lucas left mad, as he assumed that Ibarra was the same as Don Saturnino, Ibarra’s grandfather.

Kabanata 42: Ang Mag-asawang De Espedaña

  • Two (fake) doctors and their nephew visited the residence of Kapitan Tiyago to care for Maria Clara, who was sick at the time.

  • These were Don Tiburcio de Espedaña, Donya Victorina de Espedaña, and Alfonso Linares.

  • Don Tiburcio and Donya Victorina’s marriage is an unhappy one, as the only purpose of their marriage is to fulfill their different needs.

  • The reason why Don Tiburcio is a fake doctor is because he followed the advice of his friends.

Kabanata 43: Ang Mga Balak

  • Two people have intentions in this chapter:

    • Padre Damaso intends to make Maria Clara wed to Alfonso Linares instead of Ibarra, considering what happened to him (#killing).

    • Lucas goes to Padre Salvi and tells him that Ibarra gave the former P500 and afterwards kicked him. Padre Salvi sees through this lie and makes him leave his presence.

Kabanata 44: Ang Pangungumpisal

  • Padre Salvi and Donya Consolacion fight it out on what Maria Clara should be given as treatment, as she is sick. Padre Salvi ends up winning, with him *“giving” the sacrament of confession to Maria Clara.

  • Tiya Isabel ends up observing the two, and *Padre Salvi doesn’t actually listen to Maria Clara’s words. He even ends up sweating.
