Study Notes
Linares was a poor and unemployed fortune seeker who went to the Philippines to find a wealthy Filipino heiress. Both Doña Victorina and Padre Damaso supported his pursuit of Maria Clara, but she did not respond because she was in love with Ibarra. Elias, like Sisa, had a tragic story, which he told to Ibarra. Elias' grandfather was wrongly accused of burning a warehouse and was left crippled and almost died. His pregnant wife became a prostitute to support their sick husband and their son. The first son became a notorious criminal and was killed, while the second son (Elias' father) fell in love with a rich man's daughter and was sent to jail. Elias and his sister were raised as rich children until their shameful birth was exposed, and they were disgraced. Elias helped Ibarra escape from prison and sacrificed himself to divert the attention of the soldiers. Elias died, and Basilio burned his body and Sisa's body on Christmas eve. Maria Clara entered a nunnery, Padre Salvi became a chaplain, Padre Damaso died, and Capitan Tiago became an opium addict.
