Study Notes
- The Great Flood covered the entire earth, including all mountains. All living creatures on land perished, except for Noah and those with him in the ark.
- The Flood lasted for a full year. It first rained for 40 days, then the water continued to rise for another 150 days.
- Noah and his companions waited in the ark for the waters to recede, which took 16 days. They then sent out a raven and a dove to test the conditions outside.
- The dove returned with an olive leaf, indicating that the water had subsided. However, the raven did not return to the ark.
- After 307 days of floating in the ark, the water had completely drained, and Noah removed the covering. It then took another 57 days for the surface of the earth to dry completely.
- God spoke to Noah, instructing him and his family, as well as all living creatures, to leave the ark and repopulate the earth. They were also given various commands, such as building a new world and the laws regarding human and animal behavior.
- Man and animals were given dominion over the earth, and human life was considered sacred. Man was allowed to kill animals for food, but was forbidden from eating meat or blood while it was still alive.
- God established a covenant with Noah and his descendants, promising that the earth would never again be destroyed by a flood. The rainbow was given as a sign of this promise.
- After the Flood, Noah and his family dispersed across the earth, forming different nations. They initially came together to build a city and a tower, aiming to make a name for themselves and prevent being scattered. However, God intervened and caused them to be scattered instead.
