Pericardium Functions
- Protects the Heart from external pathogens and acts as a covering
- Governs Blood, helping to offload some tasks from the Heart, and can move Blood and clear heat from it
- Houses the Shen, mainly a Heart function, but assisted by the Pericardium
- Influences the centre of the thorax, affecting the Gathering Qi (Zong Qi) along with the Heart and Lungs
- Connected to the Liver, and points on the Pericardium channel can stimulate the mind and manage emotions
- Begins 5 cun lateral to the midline and runs internally to the centre of the chest
Pericardium Characteristics
- Considered the 6th Yin organ, but some believe it is an extension of the Heart and not a standalone organ
- Xin Zhu: “Master of the Heart” allows the heart to function
- Xin Bao: “Envelope of the Heart” stores the heart
- Xin Bao Luo: “Connecting Channel of the Envelope of the Heart” connects and allows other organ systems to contribute to the function of the heart
