  • After graduating from school, she trained as a nurse.
  • During the last year of World War I, she chose to serve as a volunteer at a military hospital.
  • In 1920, she got on a plane for the first time and flew over Los Angeles for 10 minutes.
  • She later said of that first occasion, "As soon as we left the ground, I knew I myself had to fly."
  • She took flying lessons.
  • Later she bought her own plane, and called it "The Canary.”
  • On April 27, 1926, her life changed forever. Captain H.H. Riley called her and asked her, "How would you like to be the first woman to fly across the Atlantic?"
  • After several years flying long distances, she decided to fly around the world, and become the first woman to do so.
  • She bought another plane and called it "Electra.”
  • Amelia set out from Los Angeles, California going east to Miami, Florida on May 21, 1937.
  • With her on the trip was her navigator Fred Noonan. His job was to give directions to Amelia.
  • Ten days later, they left Florida to Puerto Rico. They flew over the northeast edge of South America.
  • Then she continued on to North Africa and the Red Sea.
  • By flying from the Red Sea to Calcutta, India on June 17, Amelia became the first person to do so.
  • Then she flew to Bangkok, Singapore and Bandung. In Bandung, repairs were made on her plane's "long distance" instruments.
  • On June 27, Amelia left Bandung for Port Darwin in Australia, where more repairs were made on the plane's tools.
  • At 20:14 GMT, the Itasca received the last voice message from Amelia giving details of her position.
  • However, when no more messages were heard from her by 21:30, the navy believed that she must have landed in the ocean.
  • A search party consisting of 9 navy ships and 66 airplanes began to look for Amelia's plane.
  • No trace was found.
  • Two weeks later, the navy stopped searching for the missing plane.
  • Her husband George Putnam continued to look for her until October, but he too gave up.
