New York Driver's License Requirements
- To obtain a driver's license in New York, you must meet seven requirements: be at least 16 years old, have a valid Social Security Number, pass a written knowledge test and a road test, complete a 5-hour pre-licensing course or driver education course, provide proof of identity and residency, and pay the application fee and license fee.
Age Requirements
- You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a driver's license in New York State.
- If you are at least 16 but less than 17 years old, you must complete an approved driver education course and have a supervised learner's permit for at least 6 months before applying for a driver's license.
- If you are at least 17 years old, you do not need to complete a driver education course, but you must have a supervised learner's permit for at least 3 months before applying for a driver's license.

Documents Required
