    Study Notes

    Neurons and Neurotransmitters

    • Billions of neurons in the brain communicate with each other through neurotransmitters.
    • Neurons are connected to each other through a synaptic junction, where information is transferred through special chemical releases called neurotransmitters.

    Types of Neurotransmitters

    • Excitatory neurotransmitters: Glutamate, Acetylcholine, Aspartate
    • Inhibitory neurotransmitters: GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid), Glycine

    Synapse Structure

    • A synapse is the junction of two neurons.
    • Parts of a synapse:
      • Presynaptic terminal: The neuron bringing information
      • Postsynaptic terminal: The neuron taking in the information
      • Synaptic cleft: The space between the two neurons at the synapse
      • Synaptic vesicle: A sac-like structure that contains the neurotransmitter
      • Post synaptic terminal receptors: Receptors present on the post synaptic terminal
      • Autoreceptors: Receptors present on the presynaptic terminal
      • Reuptake pumps: On the presynaptic terminal, which pick up the neurotransmitter released and store it back into the synaptic vesicles
      • Ion channels: Present on the neuronal cell membrane, which open and allow ions to flow in or out

    Transmission of Impulses

    • Transmission of impulses requires the opening of ion channel gates.
    • This leads to the inflow of ions into the cell.
