Study Notes
Las neuronas
Structure
- Consist of three main parts:
- Dendrites: Receive signals from other neurons
- Cell body: Contains the nucleus and maintains the cell
- Axon: Transmits signals to other neurons or to muscles or glands
Types of neurons
- Motor neurons: Transmit signals from the central nervous system to muscles or glands
- Sensory neurons: Transmit signals from sensory receptors to the central nervous system
- Interneurons: Integrate and process information within the central nervous system
Functions
- Receive and integrate signals: Dendrites receive signals from other neurons, and the cell body integrates these signals
- Transmit signals: The axon transmits signals to other neurons or to muscles or glands
- Communicate with other neurons: Through the release of neurotransmitters
Neurotransmission
- Synapse: The gap between the axon of one neuron and the dendrites of another
- Neurotransmitters: Chemical messengers released by the axon that bind to receptors on the dendrites
- Binding of neurotransmitters: Triggers a signal in the postsynaptic neuron
Importance
- Control body functions: Neurons regulate various body functions, such as movement, sensation, and cognitive processes
- Enable learning and memory: Neurons are involved in the formation and storage of memories
- Involved in neurological disorders: Damage or dysfunction of neurons can lead to neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease
