Central Nervous System

What is the function of neuroglia?

To support neurons

What is gray matter composed of?

Nerve cells embedded in neuroglia

Why is white matter white in color?

Due to the presence of lipid material in nerve fiber myelin sheaths

What does the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) consist of?

Cranial and spinal nerves and their associated ganglia

Study Notes

Central Nervous System (CNS)

  • The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord.

Neuroglia

  • Neuroglia, also known as glial cells, provide support, protection, and maintenance functions for neurons.

Gray Matter

  • Gray matter is composed of neuronal cell bodies, dendrites, and synapses.

White Matter

  • White matter appears white due to the high concentration of myelin, a fatty insulating substance that surrounds axons.

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

  • The PNS consists of nerves that connect the CNS to the rest of the body, including sensory receptors, motor neurons, and interneurons.

Test your knowledge on the introduction and organization of the nervous system with this quiz on neuroanatomy. Explore the two main parts of the nervous system - the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) - and learn about their functions and components. See how much you know about the brain, spinal cord, meninges, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
