Study Notes

Network Interface Card (NIC)

  • A hardware component that enables a device to directly access a network
  • Comes in two types: Internal NIC and External NIC
  • Internal NIC plugs into the motherboard directly
  • External NIC is wireless and USB-based

MAC Address

  • Also known as Physical Address
  • A unique address burned onto the NIC card
  • Globally unique, meaning no two devices have the same MAC address

IP Address

  • A logical address that identifies each device on an IP network layer
  • Differs from MAC address, which is physical and unique to the NIC card

Protocols

  • Communication rules that all entities must agree on
  • Examples include HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and RDP

Computer Network

  • A computer network is a collection of interconnected computers, devices, and peripherals that work together to perform specific tasks.
  • The primary goal of a computer network is to share resources, which can include:
    • File sharing
    • Device sharing
    • Software sharing with multi-user licenses
  • Other benefits of computer networks include:
    • Voice and video calls
    • Shared internet access

Network Elements

Hardware

  • Devices that make up a computer network:
    • Computers
    • Printers
    • Phones
    • Routers
    • Switches
  • Connecting media:
    • Wired connections
    • Wireless connections
    • Satellite connections

Software

  • Messages:
    • Information that travels over the network, such as:
      • Emails
      • WhatsApp messages
  • Protocols:
    • Govern how messages flow across the network, including:
      • HTTP
      • HTTPS
      • FTP
      • RDP
