Literary criticism involves recognizing the value and meaning of literary works
It includes interpreting the origins of their merits and demerits
Some literary critics posit that critical endeavor should be devoid of self-interest
The goal is to identify and showcase excellence in literature, but the idea of impartial evaluation is not universally held
English critic and poet Matthew Arnold offered such an idea in his "The Function of Criticism at the Present Time"
He thought that it is to seek the best, most virtuous thing in the world
Arnold further asserted only selfless effort could clarify taste
In contemporary times that goal is no longer a sufficient definition of literary critique
Nowadays, identifying literary merit extends to understanding causes, or rules, affecting a work's reception

Can be examined by investigating the principles or reasons that determine acceptance or dismissals

The word "critique" in language means "choose the best" or "consider"ing in texts
The word from a linguistic POV in origin references distinguishing the true from false
Literal definitions of this suggest a component of fault-finding
Historically, the term has inherently implied both selecting the best and identification of fault.

In contemporary use “art," is employed to mean the writing that was transferred to the reader
