Study Notes

Innervation of the Face

  • The face receives innervation from the first and second pharyngeal arches.

Trigeminal Nerve (First Pharyngeal Arch)

  • Provides sensation and motor function for mastication
  • Comprises three divisions:
    • Ophthalmic nerve
      • Supratrochlear and supraorbital nerves (upper eyelid, forehead, and scalp)
      • Infraorbital nerve (medial half of eyelid, side of nose)
      • Lacrimal nerve (lateral half of upper eyelid)
      • External nasal nerve (anterior part of nose)
    • Maxillary nerve (foramen rotundum)
      • Zygomaticotemporal nerve (zygomatic arch)
      • Zygomaticofacial nerve (skin over zygomatic bone)
      • Infraorbital nerve (lower eyelid, side of nose, upper lip)
    • Mandibular nerve (foramen ovale)
      • Auriculotemporal nerve (hair-bearing area of temple)
      • Buccal nerve (skin of cheek)
      • Mental nerve (lower lip, skin of chin)

Facial Nerve (Second Pharyngeal Arch)

  • Provides motor function for facial expressions
  • Comprises five branches:
    • Temporal branch
    • Zygomatic branch
    • Buccal branch
    • Marginal mandibular branch
    • Cervical branch (platysma muscle)
  • Emerges from the anterior aspect of the parotid gland

This quiz covers the nerve supply of the face, including the innervation of facial structures derived from the first and second pharyngeal arches, and the roles of the trigeminal and facial nerves.
