Study Notes
Neptune
- Neptune is the farthest planet in our solar system, located far from the Sun (30 times farther than Earth)
- Its atmosphere is thick, consisting of water, ammonia, and methane
- Neptune appears blue due to the methane in its atmosphere
- Neptune has very strong winds (three times stronger than Jupiter's, nine times stronger than Earth's), with a large storm called the "Great Dark Spot" (large enough to contain Earth)
- The planet rotates once every 16 hours
- Neptune completes one orbit around the Sun in 165 Earth years
- It was discovered in 1846
- Neptune has at least six rings and four ring arcs, but they are difficult to see
- Neptune has 14 moons
- Triton, Neptune's largest moon, orbits backward, suggesting it may have been captured from another part of the solar system
- Triton is extremely cold (-235°C), but there are icy geysers that shoot material up to 8 km high
- Triton's atmosphere has been detected from Earth and is gradually growing warmer, though scientists do not yet know the cause
Neptune's Exploration
- Voyager 2 visited Neptune in 1989, taking pictures
- Voyager 2 studied the planet's rings, moons, and magnetic field
- Voyager 2 discovered 10 new moons and two new rings around Neptune
- Voyager 2's observations aided in the understanding of the planet's features
- The Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes also contribute to studies of Uranus' features
