What is the recommended immediate action after using a needle, ensuring safety and preventing accidental injuries?
What is the recommended immediate action after using a needle, ensuring safety and preventing accidental injuries?
- Lay the needle down on a nearby surface to allow for proper disposal later.
- Recap the needle immediately using two hands to ensure a secure fit.
- Engage the safety mechanism with one hand and dispose of the needle in the sharps container. (correct)
- Rinse the needle with disinfectant before disposal.
When is it acceptable to recap a needle?
When is it acceptable to recap a needle?
- When transporting multiple used needles at once.
- When the needle has been used on a patient with a known bloodborne pathogen.
- When a clean needle must be recapped, use the one-handed scoop method. (correct)
- It is acceptable to recap a contaminated needle if a sharps container is not immediately available.
Why is the 'one-handed technique' important when applying the safety mechanism on a needle?
Why is the 'one-handed technique' important when applying the safety mechanism on a needle?
- It is more ergonomic and reduces strain on the hand.
- It allows for a faster application of the safety mechanism.
- It is required by regulatory bodies but does not significantly improve safety.
- It minimizes the risk of needle-stick injuries by keeping one hand away from the sharp end. (correct)

Needle Safety Tips
- Needles should always be in the "up" position.
- Apply safety mechanisms using a one-handed technique.
- Use the scoop method if recapping a clean needle.
- Never recap a dirty needle.
- Immediately place used needles with the safety engaged into a sharps container.
Safe Needle Position
- Keep the needle pointed in the "up" position.
- An exposed needle pointing straight up signifies it is in a safe position.
- Remove the needle cap while holding the needle in the "up" position.
- Needles should not be pointed down or towards coworkers or patients before injection.
- After the injection, remove the needle at the same angle it was inserted, pointed up and apply the safety mechanism immediately before placing it in the sharps container.
- When removing a needle after insertion, avoid pointing it down or towards the patient.
- Point the needle in the up position, away from the patient after removing it.
- Approach a syringe and needle from underneath.
Safety Mechanism Use
- Familiarize yourself with your equipment.
- Various needle safety mechanisms exist.
- Hinge clip, accordion glide, and sliding sleeve needle safety devices are commonly used.
- Apply the needle safety mechanism using a one-handed technique.
- Use the same hand holding the needle in the up position to apply the needle safety.
- For hinged or accordion needle safety, use a thumb or finger or press against a flat surface until it clicks.
Circular Type Needle Safety Shield
- Features an extendable clear tube over the syringe barrel.
- Push the sheath straight back over the barrel until it clicks when ready to inject.
- After injection, push up on the clear flange of the sheath with the finger or thumb of the same hand until it slides over the exposed needle. After, twist the clear tube until it clicks to lock and prevent retraction.
- The clear plastic sheath must be twisted and should click into place to protect the needle from contamination.
Sharps Container
- Keep sharps containers nearby.
- Immediately discard used needles with the safety mechanism activated into the sharps container.
Recapping Needles
- Never recap a dirty needle.
- If recapping a clean needle is required, use the one-hand scoop method.
- One hand holding the syringe engages the safety mechanism, or the needle cap is scooped using the same hand holding the syringe.
- Never recap needles using one hand to hold the cap and the other to hold the needle due to safety risks.
One-Hand Scoop Method Steps
- Place the cap on a level horizontal surface and gently slide the needle halfway into the cap.
- Slowly tip up the needle and allow the cap to slide over it.
- Use the thumb of the hand holding the device to secure the cap on the syringe.
