Study Notes

Computer Software

  • Software is the set of instructions that direct the computer's hardware to perform work, distinguished from hardware by its conceptual rather than physical nature.

Purposes of Software

  • Software is needed to translate human language into machine language, as computers can only understand binary numbers.
  • Software is needed to make the computer an economical work tool, as writing software instructions (programming) is extremely difficult and time-consuming.

Programs

  • Programs are organized instruction sets that translate operations into language and instructions that the computer can understand.
  • Programs are called compilers or interpreters.
  • Decompilers are used to translate machine language programs into higher-level languages that humans can understand.

Programming

  • Programming is difficult, requiring complex logic and specific syntax.
  • Syntax must be exactly correct for a computer to correctly compile or interpret the code and run the program.
  • Problems with logic or syntax are called "bugs" and can be corrected through "debugging".

Utility Programs

  • Debugging programs are designed to help programmers debug a program.
  • Programming aids and compilers/debuggers are commonly used utility programs.

Software Packages

  • Software packages are sold on DVDs, flash drives, and through the Internet.
  • Security programs are an important market product, with Symantec and McAfee being major brands.

Windows Security

  • Windows Defender, now known as Microsoft Defender Antivirus, provides comprehensive, ongoing, and real-time protection against software threats.
  • Windows security tools, including Windows Defender, Windows Firewall, and Microsoft SmartScreen, are fully integrated in Windows operating system and work in the background.

Advantages of Windows Security System

  • Windows security services are updated when the Windows operating system is upgraded.
  • Windows security tools work in the background.

Software Licensing

  • Purchasers of software do not buy full rights to the software, but rather a license to use it.
  • Individually purchased software is licensed to one and only one computer, with exceptions for personal use on multiple machines.
  • Companies must purchase a separate copy for each machine, or a "site license" for bulk use.

Common Software Useful to Nurses

  • Most hospitals use Hospital Information System (HIS) software, which may include processors to detect various measures.
  • Many radiology and surgery equipment rely on computer processors to operate.

Computer Systems

  • A computer system is a complex entity consisting of interconnected components or factors that function together to accomplish results.
  • Most healthcare professionals use computer systems consisting of multiple, interconnected computers that function to facilitate the work of groups of providers and their support people in a network.
  • The greatest range of functionality is realized when computers are connected to other computers in a network or, as with the Internet, a system of networks.
