The French Revolution
- The French Revolution was a period in France when the people overthrew the monarchy and took control of the government.
- The Revolution began in 1789 and ended in the late 1790s.
Social Structure of France Before the Revolution
- The people of France were divided into social groups or "Estates".
- The three estates were:
- 1st Estate: Clergy (did not pay taxes)
- 2nd Estate: Nobility (did not pay taxes)
- 3rd Estate: Commoners (peasants, artisans, small peasants, landless labor, servants, big businessmen, merchants, court officials, lawyers) (paid taxes)
Causes of the French Revolution
- Empty treasury due to long years of war
- Cost of maintaining an extravagant court at the Palace of Versailles
- Debt from helping the thirteen American colonies gain independence from Britain
- High interest rates on loans (10% per annum)
- Increasing budget spent on interest payments
- Difficulty in meeting regular expenses (army, court, governmental offices, universities)
- Raised taxes on the 3rd Estate, while the 1st and 2nd Estates were exempt
- Rapid population growth and increased demand for food grains
- Price of bread (staple diet) rose rapidly due to low production
- Gap between the rich and poor widened due to low wages and high prices
