Force and Pressure

Force is a push or pull exerted upon an object, resulting in its movement or deformation. It is measured in Newtons (N), named after Sir Isaac Newton. One Newton is roughly equivalent to 101.97 kilograms pushed or pulled vertically against Earth's gravity. For instance, when you stand on the ground, your weight pushes downward onto the earth with a force equal to approximately 1000 N.

Pressure is defined as the amount of unbalanced force acting on an area per unit of surface area. The formula for pressure is P = F/A, where P is the pressure, F is the force, and A is the area. When the force is applied uniformly over an area, the pressure remains constant throughout.

Chemical Effects of Electric Currents

Electric currents are the flow of electric charge through a conductor, usually in the form of electrons. The amount of electric charge that flows through a conductor per unit of time is known as the current. Electric current has several practical applications, including heating, electromagnets, and electric power.

In chemical reactions involving electric currents, electrons flow from the negative terminal of a power source to the positive terminal, causing chemical reactions. This process is known as electrolysis. For example, the electrolysis of water breaks it into hydrogen and oxygen gases, which can be collected separately.
