- The battle was a multi-phase naval engagement, closely related to a Japanese effort to reinforce their troops on Guadalcanal.
- A Japanese convoy, carrying 7,000 troops and equipment, attempted to retake Henderson Field in early November.
- Japanese naval forces were tasked with bombarding Henderson Field to destroy U.S. aircraft.
- U.S. naval forces successfully prevented the bombardment and sank most enemy troop transports.
- Two U.S. admirals, Daniel Callaghan and Norman Scott, were killed during the battle.
- The U.S. lost two light cruisers and multiple destroyers, along with 35 aircraft.
- The Japanese navy lost two battleships, a heavy cruiser, three destroyers, eleven transports and 64 aircraft.
