Systems in the Human Body
- A system is a grouping of organs performing a function
- There are 7 main systems: Circulatory, respiratory, digestive, musculoskeletal, excretory, nervous, and reproductive
- 5 systems will be discussed
Digestive System
- Breaks down food into dissolved nutrients that are absorbed into the bloodstream
- Extracts and absorbs nutrients from food
- Removes wastes
- Maintains water and chemical balances
- Structures includes: Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines (small & large), liver, rectum, and anus
Main Processes in the Digestive System
- Ingestion occurs when eating or drinking through the mouth
- Digestion involves mechanical and chemical processes to convert food
- Nutrients are taken up by the blood system during absorption
- Egestion involves undigested food and materials passing through the anus in the form of feces
Process of Digestion
- Food processing starts with ingestion, which is eating
- Teeth perform mechanical digestion of food by masticating (chewing)
- Peristalsis (wave-like contractions) of smooth muscle carries the bolus (food ball) toward the stomach once entering the oesophagus
- The bolus passes through a sphincter (muscular ring) from the oesophagus into the stomach
- The stomach performs chemical (hydrochloric acid) and mechanical digestion
- Bile from the liver is contained in the gallbladder and emulsifies (breaks into small particles) lipids (fats), which aids in mechanical digestion of fats
- Tiny villi (finger-like projections) cover the walls of the small intestine, increasing the surface area for more efficient food absorption
- Water and minerals are absorbed from undigested food by parts of the large intestine (colon)
- Remaining material is compacted into feces
