National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
- The Union Cabinet has approved the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with an aim to introduce several changes in the Indian education system from school to college level.
- The NEP 2020 aims at making "India a global knowledge superpower".
- The Ministry of Human Resource Development has been renamed to the Ministry of Education.
Goals of NEP 2020
- Make education more holistic and child-centered.
- Improve access and equity in education.
- Enhance the quality of education and learning outcomes.
- Promote innovation and research in education.
School Education
- Aims for 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in school education by 2030.
- Introduces a new 5+3+3+4 structure for ages 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years respectively.
- Early childhood education (3-6 years) will be included in the school curriculum.
- Emphasizes foundational literacy and numeracy, integrating vocational education from Class 6 with internships.
- Medium of instruction till at least Grade 5 will be in the mother tongue/regional language.
- Board exams will focus on testing core competencies rather than rote learning.
- Students can retake Class 10 and 12 board exams twice.
- A new National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education (NCFTE) will be formulated.

Higher Education
- Aims to raise the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by 2035, adding 3.5 crore seats.
- Introduces a credit system with a flexible curriculum for undergraduate degrees (3 or 4 years) with multiple exit options and certifications.
- M.Phil courses will be discontinued, and all programs will be interdisciplinary.
- An Academic Bank of Credits will be established to facilitate transfer of credits between institutions.
- Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) will be set up as a single umbrella body for regulating higher education (excluding medical and legal education).
- HECI will have four independent verticals: National Higher Education Regulatory Council (NHERC), General Education Council (GEC), Higher Education Grants Council (HEGC), and National Accreditation Council (NAC).
- National Research Foundation will be created as an apex body for fostering a strong research culture and building research capacity across higher education.
