National Artists of the Philippines

The purpose of the Order of National Artists is to recognize Filipino artists who have made significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the country.

The goal of promoting creative expression is to develop a national cultural identity.

The criteria for being recognized as a National Artist is to have made significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the country, achieved artistic accomplishment at its highest level, and dedicated their lives to their works to pave the way for future generations of Filipino artists.

The three categories under which National Artists can be recognized are Literature, Film and Broadcasting / Broadcast Arts, and Architecture, Design and Allied Arts.

Literature = Poetry, fiction, essay, playwriting, journalism and/or literary criticism Film and Broadcasting / Broadcast Arts = Direction, writing, production design, cinematography, editing, camera work, and/or performance Architecture, Design and Allied Arts = Architecture design, interior design, industrial arts design, landscape architecture

Some examples of artistic disciplines under the Literature category include poetry, fiction, essay, playwriting, journalism, and literary criticism.
