Narrative Perspective and Mode of Presentation
- It's important to distinguish between the author and the narrator.
- The narrator is the speaker who presents the story's development.
- The difference between author and narrator becomes clear when the narrator is a dramatized character from whose point of view the story is told.
- The mode of presentation impacts how the reader views characters, plot, and feels drawn into the story.
Narrative Perspective
- Concerns who is telling the story.
First-person narration
- Uses "I" and "me."
- Usually the novel's central character, but sometimes a minor character observing the action.
- The reader can easily identify with the narrator.
- Information may not always be reliable because the narrator provides a subjective view of events.
Third-person narration
- There are two types of third-person narration
Omniscient narrator
- The point of view is unlimited.
- Knows everything about characters and can look inside their minds.
- May comment on events or characters' behavior.
- Knows how the plot will develop.
- Can switch between places and times using flashbacks or foreshadowing.
Selective Narrator
- Has a limited point of view.
- Only has insight into one character's thoughts and feelings.
- The story's development is seen and judged through a single character's perspective.
- It's easy for the reader to identify with that character but also be influenced by his/her interpretation of events.
